The students at OSU Medical School are blessed with some amazing staff members. Today, a small reception was held in the library to show our appreciation for the library staff and Lee, the motherly front desk receptionist.
These individuals go out of their way to make our lives easier. They leave notes of encouragement around the library around difficult times during the semester. They take the time to memorize the class composite so that they can greet each student by name. They cheerfully meet any and every possible request and need, making sure that we have the resources to succeed.
On particularly stressful days, it's nice to know that these staff members are here for us and truly care about our welfare. They are much appreciated and loved.

Denim Scrubs!
Yes, those are denim scrubs. Bonita and Julie somehow convinced Deb, the bookstore manager, that NO ONE was going to buy them. Ever. I can't believe someone would need convincing...
Bonita asked me if I had a Bedazzler to make this outfit even more awesome. Can you imagine rhinestone patterns on the pockets? I can, and it's perfection. ;)
While I was very impressed Bonita had the guts to wear these to class, I would love to see her show up to the first day of rotations in them. Bahahaha.
Mom, this is why we don't wear a jean jacket with jeans...

Proctology Practice
Aaron acting like a typical boy, dipping his gloved finger into his chocolate milk before the exam
Yesterday was a day I've been dreading from the moment it was announced: the male exam. I was let off easy a couple of weeks ago when several patient models didn't show for the female exam and I was temporarily exempt. Not so fortunate this time around...
Let me preface this by saying that genitalia are gross; I know that's not professional, but there is something seriously wrong with someone who wants to examine those parts of the human anatomy every day.
To make matters worse, I was the only female in my lab group. The physician teaching us kept assuming much of the information was common knowledge - I'm sure it is if you have a penis and scrotum. I, on the other hand, had no idea what happened in the 'coughing' test besides the fact that the patient turns their head and coughs. It was like sex education in high school all over again.
After demonstrating the exam on our patient, our group went into the hall and was asked if there were any questions. What didn't I have a questions about? However, I, along with the rest of my colleagues, kept my mouth shut as we awkwardly awaited the impending horror. No one volunteered initially to go first, so I took one for the team (that is, the female team) and raised my hand. I was surprised by my bravery.
My patient model was a nice older gentleman who was kind enough to let me know when I was in the 'correct' places during the various stages. It did not take long, was not nearly as uncomfortable as I imagined, and was far from horrific. That equals a surprise success in my book. The person I felt most sorry for was on the receiving end, for he had to go through 4 more after me. Bless his heart...and his bum.
Easter Flood
It seems like the Easter forecast threatens rain each year. This is especially stressful for my parents, as our church always plans a big Easter egg hunt for the Children's Department. This year, they stuffed 4,000 eggs with candy, only to be met with spring storms. The kiddos still got their eggs, the adult service was amazing (teach it, Daddy!), and our family had an amazing lunch full of great food and fellowship.
The water crept into our garage and kept rising, threatening to flood the house. My dad, Aaron, and my uncle and cousin swept water away from the entrance for an hour and a half in an attempt to keep the current at bay. They were successful - the garage is a mess, but our home kept dry. Others in the neighborhood weren't so fortunate and ended up with between 1 and 2 feet of water in their houses.
If only we could distribute the rain to the areas that really needed it... we've had our fill and more.
No matter our ages, we still wake up to baskets on Easter morning! I never want this to end, even when I have children... Are you reading, Mom? ;)
This year my mom put our goodies in mixing bowls - you can never have enough, especially when you're a baker!
Aaron's not big on sweets, so he got a monster bag of trail mix and chips along with some Reef sandals for the beach this summer!
Matt, our friend from med school, came down for church and Easter lunch. Handsome future doctors.
My mommy's Easter basket from Dad and her girlies! She got the new Daisy Eau so Fresh perfume - it smells heavenly! Love me some Sephora and the free samples with online ordering :) Aren't the "Reester Bunnies" so cute?
I got these adorable sandals. They make my feet look fancy...
Matt's lucky he left when he did, because the spring showers turned into torrential downpours. In a matter of 30 minutes, our neighborhood was in the midst of a flash flood. They stationed police trucks later in the afternoon to deter drivers trying to turn onto our street

Easter Eve
Easter is a big holiday in my family, as my dad is a pastor. It's a weekend full of family and celebration of the greatest act of love in history.
Macee and I kicked off the weekend by trying a recipe I'd seen on Pioneer Woman's blog. Smore's with Peeps! I'm normally not a big Peeps fan, but these ooey-gooey treats were delicious! Messy, but delicious.

Before...
After... Chubby Bunnies!
Warning: There is no neat method of consumption.
This morning, my sweetie surprised me with beautiful flowers. While he took a nap, Macee and I dyed Easter eggs. Glitter eggs have been a staple at our house since they came out. This year we added Neon to the mix.
This one didn't make it :(
Glitter makes everything better. Aren't they beautiful?
We decided to make a dirt cake for dessert tomorrow, even though my mom had already baked a carrot cake and made homemade banana split ice cream. That's my family!
Macee dyed some coconut flakes with green food coloring, fixed some sparkly pipe cleaner to the sides of mini paper cups and placed a candy egg in each "basket." Can't wait for our real Easter baskets in the morning!

Waxing Wednesdays
Yesterday was Wednesday. OMM lecture and lab takes place on Wednesdays. Therefore, Wednesdays are for shaving my legs. Yes, I shave my legs more than once a week. However, it has been my experience that if I do not shave my legs on hump day, we will be guaranteed to be working on our partner's legs. My paranoia paid off yesterday: lab was over leg treatments. You're welcome Natalie, and thanks for shaving for me too!
Just one of the many, many ways med school dictates my everyday life. I can't wait until I have the money to get waxed. Maybe I'll continue the tradition with "Waxing Wednesdays..."

Med Student Necessities
Today was a typical, ordinary, blah Tuesday filled with Bacteriology out the wazoo. As such, I will share two medical student necessities.
1. Prilosec OTC
If you're not a hypochondriac, you will become one in medical school. I can't begin to imagine the degree to which we will frightfully self-diagnose next year in Pathology. I self-diagnosed myself with peptic ulcers in Histology last semester and from today's GI Physiology lecture. And for all you skeptics, my doctor concurred. The obscene amounts of caffeine I've been consuming and constant stress have been no help. After not sleeping last night due to stomach pain, I began a round of this stuff. Ahhhh, relief (hopefully?).2. 5 Hour Energy
Due to said caffeine overdosing and my resultant goal to limit my consumption, I rely more heavily on this miracle now more than ever. We buy it by the case (I love Sam's Club!), and we're not the only ones. A fellow classmate wrote to the company expressing his undying love for the product and they sent him a free 6-pack. Med students might single-handedly keep them in business. Let's hope the FDA doesn't come out saying it causes liver damage or something in the next few years. That's too many physicians to replace.
